Duchess unveils refurbished Hospice in-patient unit

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester was welcomed today by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Kent and Hospice Patron Marianna, Viscountess Monckton of Brenchley to the Heart of Kent Hospice to open the newly refurbished in-patient unit.

The Duchess greeted the Hospice trustees and was then taken on a tour of the ward with Chief Executive Kate Bosely and Lady Monckton to spend time with patients who are currently receiving care at the Hospice.

Three children from Pennies Day Nursery were also introduced to the Duchess who admired paintings the children had created for the new refurbishment.

To commemorate the opening of the in-patient unit and her visit the Duchess was than invited to unveil a plaque. "HRH was delightful and the patients were very touched to spend time with her," said Kate Bosely. "We are very proud that HRH came to visit The Heart of Kent Hospice to see what we have achieved. It was also the perfect opportunity to thank our supporters, volunteers, trustees and the community at large – who keep our Hospice going."

"The facilities have been updated to serve the needs of patients and their families. This refurbishment will enable us to provide greater privacy, dignity and comfort for our patients. I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in the project."

The re-opening of the In-Patient Unit following an 18 month programme of refurbishment. The work was carried out as a result of a generous grant of £286,000, which was given to the Hospice from the Department of Health to improve the patients’ environment. The refurbishment has included a complete redecoration of the Unit including new furniture, double glazed windows throughout, en-suite single rooms, new furnishings including curtains and bedding, new flooring, radiators, over-bed lighting and ceiling hoists for each room.

Additional work including a new bathroom, family bedroom and complimentary therapy room were funded by the Francis Winham Foundation, Genzyme Corporation and the Caron Keating Foundation.
